How does surgical scar revision work?

Surgical scar reduction is carried out by making incisions on either side of the scar to remodel the surrounding skin. Depending on the location of the scar, it can be made into a skin fold so that it’s less noticeable. While there will still be some visible scarring, it should look much neater and less obvious.

What are my non-surgical scar revision options?

Non-surgical scar revision/reduction options include cool laser, TCA peels, microneedling, fillers and steroid injections. A combination of these are sometimes used, and you can learn more about them in your discussion with your medical aesthetics practitioner.

Are the results permanent?

The results of scar reduction are permanent, but you will have scarring from the revision. The goal is to create a neater and tidier scar that’s less conspicuous than it previously was.

Does scar revision hurt?

You won’t be able to feel anything throughout a surgical scar revision procedure as it’s carried out under local anaesthetic, but you will feel some pain and have some swelling for a couple of weeks afterwards while the wound heals. Non-surgical treatments will also be pain free. The treatment

On the day of your treatment, you’ll have time to ask any last-minute questions before the procedure begins. There are a number of options available for scar revision/reduction, and these will either be surgical or non-surgical.

If you are having surgical scar revision, then it is carried out as day surgery, and you’ll be able to return home the same day. It’s performed under local anaesthetic, so although you’ll be awake, you won’t be able to feel anything throughout the procedure. Depending on the size, shape and location of your scar, your doctor will perform one of two procedures. They’ll either make incisions around the scar to remove it and carefully restitch the skin in a V-shape so it’s less conspicuous, or they’ll remodel the scar into a skin fold.

Other non-surgical scar revision/reduction options include using a cool laser, TCA peels, microneedling, fillers and steroid injections. A combination of these are sometimes used, and you can learn more about them in your discussion with your medical aesthetics practitioner.

Recovery

You’ll be able to leave the clinic on the same day as you have the treatment, and we’ll give you guidance on how to look after your stitches after the procedure and how to apply a temporary dressing. We’ll make a 7 – 10 day follow-up appointment to have your stitches removed, too.

Aftercare

We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself, so we’re here to support you. You’ll be given an aftercare leaflet and if you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact our 24/7 helpline.

Your doctor will advise you as to whether you’ll need to take time off work to rest, and they’ll also let you know how long you’ll need to avoid any strenuous activities that might put a strain on the wound. The revised scar may be swollen for around 2 weeks, and the healing process will continue over the following weeks. It will take time for the scar revision to fade, but the results will be long lasting.
